The following story is a feature article written by my daughter, Jasmine, for a writing class she took in 2004. It tells you more about our business.

If you visited Amy Ringger, a seamstress who lives 1 ¼ miles from her mailbox, in the country in Texas, she would probably greet you with a tape measure hanging around her neck. And if you stayed long enough, you might leave with an item of clothing under your arm.

Amy Ringger conducts her sewing business in the living room of the 720 sq. ft. cabin that she, her husband Dale, and their six children live in since they moved there a month ago. Her hours are sporadic, though she usually sews in the middle of the week. The employees, her six children, ages 5-15, are employed whenever they're needed, the younger ones doing things like cleaning the sewing machine and working spaces.

A website, Ringgerclothing.com, does the advertising, and she ships her clothing by mail unless the customers are local. The style of dress or skirt she enjoys sewing the most is the A-line skirt, but her favorite things to sew are baby clothes, especially for baby girls.

She makes clothing to fit people according to their measurements, so most of the garments are not already sewn, although some customers buy outfits that are already completed which are pictured on the website.

Amy's mother, and great grandmother sewed, so she had an interest in the art from an early age. The first thing she ever sewed, (and the favorite), when she was nine years old, was a blue, red, and cream colored skirt with flowers. When asked why she started sewing for other people, she explains, "I decided that I wanted to earn money doing something I enjoyed doing." Her mom helped her learn, and though she started her own business at age sixteen, she also gained experience doing pattern design in a bridal shop for several months. Amy hopes and plans to continue her sewing business for a long while yet, even when she gets old!

Update from Amy, March 2005:  We have now moved out of our temporary cabin and into a bigger house so we have more room for sewing and other projects.
